We are a directing team—Glenn Holsten and Daniel Traub. Glenn has been documenting Lily’s work in broken places around the world since 1988, and has witnessed her growth as an increasingly “realized” human being. We are incorporating archival footage of Lily’s work in North Philadelphia and Korogocho that Glenn has acquired over the years of documenting Lily’s work with new footage of her efforts in Rwanda, Beijing and India that have been documented by her son Daniel. An accomplished cinematographer, Daniel has traveled across the world, capturing Lily’s breathtaking community-based artwork and the astounding interactions the artist has had in each country.
Glenn first met Lily in the mid 1980’s when he shot a short film for public television about the Village of Arts and Humanities in North Philadelphia called It Pulls It All Apart. Holsten became engaged with the Village of Arts and Humanities and worked as an instructor at The Village of Arts and Humanities for four years. Throughout the following decades, Glenn has continued to work with and learn from Lily as his filmmaking career has evolved. He was director of An Angel in the Village, a portrait of Lily Yeh’s work in North Philadelphia and Korogocho, Nairobi. He also worked with Lily on a three-year project with inmates at Graterford Prison.
He recently toured the festival circuit with OC87: The Obsessive-Compulsive, Major Depression, Bipolar, Asperger’s Movie, a documentary about recovery from the depths of mental illness through filmmaking. His Saint of 9/11, a biography of Father Mychal Judge, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in May, 2006. Other recent documentary films include JIM IN BOLD, which harnesses the power of young voices to reveal the challenges and triumphs of being young and gay in America; Thomas Eakins: Scenes from Modern Life (PBS), a lyrical examination of America through the eyes of the 19th century painter
Daniel is an award-winning documentary cinematographer and still photographer. From 1999–2007, he lived in China where he filmed numerous documentaries and reports for European and American television networks including PBS, National Geographic, German Television ZDF, and Arte. As a photographer, his projects have explored marginalized communities and border regions in the midst of crisis and transformation. Daniel’s images have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, London Telegraph, and Time. His work has also been exhibited in Asia, Europe, the United States, and is in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Glenn and Daniel have collaborated on OC87: The Obsessive Compulsive, Major Depression, Bipolar, Asperger’s Movie and Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists. In addition, they worked together on a project with Lily in Soviet Georgia.
Ann, Editor of The Barefoot Artist, is an Academy Award and Emmy nominated producer-director and editor. She has always worked in both the commercial and independent world, one feeding the other. Her commercial work history includes years in broadcast television, with corporations, agencies and post-houses. But it is independent doc and non-profit work that suits Ann best.
While collaborating with Glenn and Daniel on The Barefoot Artist, Ann completed the Sundance and ITVS fundedNiños de la Memoria/Children of Memory with Kaye Pyle & María T. Rodríguez. Niños looks at the El Salvadorcivil war through the lens of ‘disappeared’ children. Mirror Dance with Frances McElroy & María T. Rodríguez aired on Independent Lens. Family Gathering, co-produced with Lise Yasui, garnered an Academy Award nomination and was broadcast on The American Experience. The APT distributed CINE Golden Eagle winner Ballycastle was a collaboration with Frances McElroy and APT offering KNEE DEEP, co-produced with Sharon Mullally, was nominated for an Emmy.
